In the age of social media, it’s every brand’s dream to ‘go viral’. And amongst the many platforms available today, Twitter continues to be one of the most popular.

So how do you make your tweets stand out from the barrage of alerts that are bombarding your consumer every minute?

How do you convert your post into a click?

Here are some tried and tested tips to write effective tweets that may just give your brand that much sought-after status of ‘going viral’.

1. Short but Sweet

One of Twitter’s USPs is that it has a word limit of 280 characters, which forces you to keep your message concise and to the point. But that doesn’t mean your post should be boring. Stay true to your brand voice and then pack in as much punch as you can in those limited characters. An insider with Twitter suggests implying a sense of urgency, such as offering a discount or mentioning freebies in your tweet for better impact.

2. Two-way Street

Gone are the days when marketing campaigns would talk to its consumers. Now, you have to engage with them. Especially if you’re creating content for millennials, the only way to capture their attention is to interact with them. Ask questions, create conversations, get feedback, start surveys, opinion polls or contests. And don’t forget to spell out your call to action clearly – whether you want them to follow you, sign up, visit your website or shop now.

3. #Hashtags

When you add a ‘#’ to a word or an unbroken phrase in your Twitter post, it will link to all other tweets that include the same word or phrase. This is a good way to give your marketing campaign context and longevity – For eg, the Aditya Birla Group’s #BigOnIdeas campaign for TEDx. However, don’t go overboard with hashtags either or they could distract your audience and lead them away from your post. Experts recommend sticking to one or two hashtags per tweet.

4. Get Visual

Use bold images, eye-catching GIFs or short videos to accompany your tweets as much as possible. Videos are especially effective according to Twitter’s internal data that revealed there are over 2 billion video views per day on the platform. What’s so appealing about videos is that you can communicate so much more in a limited space as compared to any other form of content.

5. Right Place, Right Time

There’s a time for everything and that age-old saying holds true for when to tweet as well. Depending on who your target audience is, use data-driven analytics to find out when is the best time to capture their attention on this social media platform.

It goes without saying that the more frequently you tweet, the more likely you’ll get seen, but don’t do it for the sake of it. And whenever you can, incorporate topical hashtags in your posts – an example is Sephora Nail Colour’s #ManiPediDay promotion.
