The brief
Produce Chem Beats, Tata Chemicals' 28-page quarterly magazine, for print and flipbook. Each issue collates updates and news from the company's branches worldwide into a single editorial format.
The challenge
Chem Beats carries genuinely technical material every quarter, market pricing data, acquisition detail, sustainability metrics, spanning regions from China to Kenya. The brief was to present that material to the client's standards, in a format that reads as attractive and creative rather than a trade digest.
Our approach
Unlike a design-only account, TIC owns the publication end to end here: writing, editing, designing and proofing every issue, with the client supplying source content and images.
Most layouts run on a set template built for speed across the 28 pages. Four sections get built fresh each issue: the cover, the cover story, a personal column, and the back-cover advert. The rest run under standing names borrowed from chemistry itself, Elementals for company news, Vector for market data, Theory for a leadership interview, Equilibrium for capability building, In Motion for digital projects, Atomic for safety and sustainability, Bonds for employee stories, turning the subject matter into the magazine's own structure.
The heaviest material sits in Vector's Market Pulse: region-by-region pricing and policy shifts across China, India, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East, broken into short blocks under bold headers rather than one continuous report. The cover story takes the opposite approach. A recent issue turned a company acquisition, certifications, capacity figures included, into a photo-led feature with a stencil-style headline, built around a single striking image pulled from the client's photobank.
Each cycle opens with an editorial meeting to lock sections; TIC pitches cover story or personal column topics where the client hasn't already planned one. Pagination follows the prior issue, and a consolidated content brief from the client kicks off the draft. A writer produces copy, a second editor reviews it, and design starts only once that copy is signed off, moving straight to PDF review. Three cover options go out in the client's established format, a consolidated file carries final approval alongside a full style-sheet proofread, and the emailer is written, designed and approved on the same cycle. Delivery is staggered: flipbook and emailer first, a hi-res bleed-free print PDF a day or two later.
The Impact
Ten issues in, Chem Beats runs on eight standing sections built entirely from chemistry vocabulary, each holding a different kind of update. A single issue can carry a multimillion-dollar acquisition, a five-region market report and a leadership interview through the same production sequence without any of them turning into denser, harder-to-read text.
